Perplexity Open-Sources SPACE: A Firecracker MicroVM Sandbox for AI Agents

Perplexity has released SPACE, an open-source sandbox environment built on Firecracker MicroVMs, designed specifically to provide isolated, secure execution environments for AI agents. Firecracker, originally developed by AWS for serverless workloads, provides lightweight virtualization with millisecond startup times, making it well-suited for running untrusted agent-generated code safely. SPACE addresses one of the core infrastructure challenges in deploying autonomous AI agents: how to let agents execute arbitrary code or interact with systems without exposing the host environment to risk. Developers building agentic pipelines, code-execution tools, or sandboxed AI workflows can use SPACE as a production-grade foundation rather than building isolation from scratch. This is a meaningful open-source contribution to the agent infrastructure stack from a prominent AI company.
