IBM Extends Bob Agentic Coding Assistant to Air-Gapped and Self-Hosted Environments

IBM has announced that Bob, its agentic software development assistant, is now available for self-hosted and air-gapped deployments, allowing enterprises with strict data residency or security requirements to run the full agent locally without sending code to external endpoints. This is a meaningful expansion for regulated industries — financial services, defense, healthcare, and government — where cloud-based coding assistants have faced adoption barriers due to compliance and IP concerns. Bob is designed to autonomously handle multi-step development tasks including code generation, refactoring, and test writing, and the self-hosted version brings these capabilities inside the enterprise perimeter. Developers at organizations that have been unable to adopt tools like GitHub Copilot or Cursor due to policy constraints now have a credible agentic alternative to evaluate. The move also signals that enterprise AI vendors are increasingly competing on deployment flexibility, not just model capability.
