Cloudflare Releases Clef and Clef-Flash: Open-Weight Decision Models Returning Typed Probabilities

Cloudflare has open-weighted Clef and Clef-Flash, a new class of decision models that output typed probabilities rather than free-form text, designed for classification, routing, and guardrail tasks at inference time. Unlike generative LLMs used for classification, these models produce structured probabilistic outputs directly, enabling deterministic downstream logic without parsing or prompt engineering. This architecture is particularly well-suited for content moderation pipelines, request routing in agentic systems, and low-latency classification layers in API middleware. Clef-Flash is the smaller, faster variant optimized for edge deployment, aligning with Cloudflare's Workers AI infrastructure. Developers building safety layers or routing logic on top of LLMs should evaluate these as lighter-weight, more predictable alternatives to using full generative models for binary or categorical decisions.
